The European Union should seek to harmonize biodiversity conservation rules within the appropriate international framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, instead of trying to legislate in a discriminatory manner on ecosystems that are outside its jurisdiction. This was the message of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) in a written response submitted during public consultation to the European Commission on “Biodiverse Grasslands, Biofuels and Bioliquids” which closed on Monday, February 8 in Brussels.

Brochure - Climate Change - 06/18/2009
“Take care of the planet in your daily life – sugarcane’s contribution to climate change mitigation” presents sugarcane’s efficiency in the production of ethanol, the biofuel that substitutes over half of the gasoline needed to supply the country’s light vehicle fleet, as well as in the production of other low-carbon biofuels that can also be produced from the plant. The brochure also tackles the issue of generating bioelectricity by using straw and bagasse, which is what’s left of the sugarcane after it has been processed into ethanol and sugar.
