Five Brazilians are on the list of the world’s 100 most influential people in bioenergy for 2011 - 2012, prepared by Biofuels Digest, one of the most prominent international newsletters covering renewable energy. Three of the five Brazilians ranked are in the top 25, including the President of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), Marcos Jank, who ranked 24th. The list, based on votes submitted by Biofuels Digest readers around the world, is led for the second consecutive year by the United States Secretary of Agriculture and former Iowa State Governor, Tom Vilsack. Iowa is the biggest corn producer in the U.S. and the country’s leader in ethanol production. The top-ranked Brazilian is the CEO of Raízen, Vasco Dias, in third position. The CEO of Petrobras Biofuels, Miguel Rossetto, is in 21st, while Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, appearing on the list for the first time, is in 36th. Completing the Brazilian contingent, the CEO of Cosan, Marcos Lutz, ranked 58th. The list includes names from 11 countries, who received votes from more than 400 Biofuels Digest readers. “For the second consecutive year, readers and editors have emphatically selected U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as the world’s most influential personality in bioenergy. This year, the voting focused on growth opportunities, including commercial and high technology organizations in Brazil and the United States,” said Jim Lane, editor and publisher of Biofuels Digest. Ethanol Summit 2011 BP Biofuels CEO Phil New came in second in the Biofuels Digest. The list also includes the Amyris CEO John Melo; the President of the Bioenergy Institute at the University of California at Berkeley, Jay Keasiling; the CEO of Khosla Ventures, Vinod Khosla; the CEO of Italy's M&G Group, Guido Ghisolfi; the CEO of Virent Energy Systems, Lee Edwards; the global sustainable bioenergy researcher at Dartmouth University in the U.S., Lee Lynd and the President of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) in the U.S., Bob Dineen. All were speakers at the 2011 edition of the Ethanol Summit, organized by UNICA in Sao Paulo last June. BP and Amyris are also participants in the award-winning AGORA Project, one of the most important communications and marketing initiatives in the sugar-energy industry in Brazil.
